Telefonica Affiliates Go Digital with Miranda

February 20,2001 - St. Laurent, Quebec - Miranda Technologies today announced that more than 400 of its imaging Series digital video/audio interfaces, as well as accompanying Symphonie and Quartet housing frames were purchased by Telefonica, a Madrid, Spain-based Telecommunications company. The broadcast-quality converters, encoders, and decoders will play an integral role in the digital transition of two of Telefonica’s Buenos Aires-based affiliates - Televisión Federal’s Channel 11 and Azul Televisión’s Channel 9.

Televisión Federal and Azul TV evaluated products from most major manufacturers prior to selecting Miranda. The products were purchased via Miranda’s Latin American master distributor, Inviso (Video Solutions International, Inc.), based in Miami Lakes, Florida in conjunction with Viditec, of Argentina, a major dsitributor of broadcast equipment.

“Miranda’s conversion products exceed the capabilities of other converters in the market,” said Eduardo de Nucci, Director of Sales and Marketing at Viditec. “Miranda emerged as the distinct leader, offering the best product based on price, performance, and service. With Miranda, these stations are not only getting the right equipment for their conversion to digital, but also the dependable service to back it up.”

The purchase included over 100 SDA-202i, SDA-101i, and SDA 702i distribution amplifiers, as well as imaging Series NTSC/PAL to 4:2:2 adaptive decoders and 4:2:2 to NTSC/PAL encoders with genlock. Televisión Federal will also be using Miranda’s RCP-100 remote control panel to monitor and control the new imaging cards. RCP-100 addresses the demands placed by On-Air operations by offering several features that help speed up production including integrated LCD-based displays; bright, back-lit multi-line display; and four rotary knobs to give users instant access to all key operational and configuration parameters.

Miranda’s ICP-S software control panel for Windows NT, was choosen to allow Azul Televisión to configure, control and continuously monitor the status of all video and audio modules from a software environment.

Also included in the acquisition for both stations were 16 Symphonie housing frames. The 16-slot frame offers Televisión Federal and Azul Televisión greater flexibility and integration, allowing users to access the power of up to 16 imaging Series video and audio modules in one frame simply by snapping in a corresponding rear module. With Miranda’s ICP-S remote control software, audio and video modules in the Symphonie frame can be controlled and monitored without the interface depriving the stations of the 16th slot.

Also purchased were 12 Quartet frames, each capable of accommodating up to four audio or video modules.

“In recent years, the Latin American market has established itself as a viable force within the broadcasting arena,” said Frank Shufelt, president and general manager at Inviso. “The decision to convert both of these important stations to digital is definitely a milestone within the Latin American broadcasting community. We look forward to other stations in this market following suite in the near future.”
